1. Uneven Coffee Distribution

A consistent distribution routine is often the most effective way to reduce channeling.

2. Coffee Clumps

Static and grinder design can cause grounds to form clumps.

A clump may appear dense on the surface while hiding an air pocket underneath. It can also create high-density and low-density areas within the puck.

A thin-needle distribution tool can help break up clumps and redistribute the grounds, but aggressive or inconsistent stirring may create new density differences.

The objective is an even coffee bed—not maximum stirring.

3. Uneven Tamping

Tamping compresses the prepared coffee bed into a stable puck.

If the tamp is tilted, one side of the puck becomes thinner than the other. Water can travel through the thinner section more quickly.

Tamping pressure is usually less important than:

  • Keeping the tamper level

  • Compressing the puck once

  • Using a repeatable technique

4. Edge Gaps

Overfilling can damage the puck surface when the portafilter is locked into the machine.

Check the puck after brewing and look for deep shower-screen impressions, although a light impression after extraction is not always a problem.

6. Grind Too Fine

A finer grind increases puck resistance, but finer is not always safer.

When the coffee is extremely fine, water may struggle to move through most of the puck. It then concentrates pressure against the weakest area until a channel forms.

The shot may begin very slowly and then suddenly accelerate.

How to Fix Espresso Channeling

The best solution is usually to simplify and standardise the workflow.

Step 1: Keep the Dose Accurate

Use the same dose for each shot.

Even a small difference can change puck depth, headspace and resistance.

Step 2: Distribute Before Tamping

Create an even coffee bed before compression.

If using a needle distribution tool:

  • Reach the lower portion of the basket

  • Use controlled, consistent movements

  • Finish by levelling the upper surface

  • Avoid leaving deep holes or an uneven top layer

Step 3: Tamp Once and Keep It Level

Place the basket on a stable surface and apply pressure vertically.

A self-levelling tamper can reduce variation, but careful technique with a traditional tamper can also work well.

Step 4: Avoid Disturbing the Puck

After tamping:

  • Do not tap the sides

  • Do not repeatedly polish the surface

When troubleshooting, avoid changing several variables at once.

Prepare three shots using:

  • The same coffee

  • The same dose

  • The same grind setting

  • The same basket

  • The same yield

  • The same temperature

For each shot, record:

  • Time to first drop

  • Total shot time

  • Final beverage weight

  • Flow behaviour

Only change the puck-preparation method.

Treat a puck screen as a supporting tool rather than a replacement for good puck preparation.

Does Pre-Infusion Reduce Channeling?

Pre-infusion can help.

Gently wetting the puck before full pressure gives the coffee more time to saturate and expand. This may reduce the sudden pressure that encourages water to break through weak areas.

However, pre-infusion cannot completely repair a poorly prepared puck.

If the coffee bed contains major density differences or cracks, water may still find the same weak pathways—only more slowly.

Start with consistent puck preparation, then use pre-infusion as an additional control.

Why the Puck After Brewing Can Be Misleading

Many baristas inspect the used puck for evidence of channeling.

A cracked, muddy or damaged puck may look concerning, but depressurisation can change its appearance after the shot has ended.

Removing the portafilter, releasing pressure and drying the basket can all alter the puck.

Post-shot inspection can provide clues, but extraction behaviour and taste are more reliable.

Do You Need a Bottomless Portafilter?

A bottomless portafilter is useful because it makes spurting and uneven flow easier to see.

However, it is not required.

You can still diagnose channeling by monitoring:

  • Time to first drop

  • Total extraction time

  • Beverage weight

  • Flow-rate changes

  • Shot-to-shot consistency

  • Taste

A scale that keeps these measurements visible can provide more actionable information than appearance alone.

Build a Repeatable Espresso Workflow

  1. Dry and clean the basket.

  2. Weigh the coffee dose.

  3. Grind into the basket.

  4. Distribute the grounds evenly.

  5. Tamp once and keep it level.

  6. Insert the portafilter carefully.

  8. Observe time to first drop and flow development.

  9. Stop at the target beverage weight.

  10. Taste and record the result.

The objective is not to eliminate every small variation. It is to make preparation consistent enough that recipe adjustments produce predictable results.
